The Design – Scleral contact lenses are larger in diameter than traditional contacts. This allows them to vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye) instead of resting on top of the cornea. The vault leaves space between the contact lens and cornea which is filled naturally with the patient’s tears. The vault design provides a smooth sphere surface to correct irregularities of the cornea that cause irregular astigmatism which cannot be corrected with glasses.
Surprisingly Comfortable – The cornea is the most nerve dense tissue in the whole body! Because the scleral contact lens rests on the sclera and not the cornea, these large lenses are very comfortable. In addition, their design encompassing the vault of tears, keeps a reservoir of tears on the eye longer thus helping to alleviate dry eye symptoms.
