Pediatric Comprehensive Eye Examinations
We Care About the Little Eyes in Your Life!
Our doctors are passionate about ensuring the little ones in your family get the appropriate care for their optimal vision performance.
Children are the most vulnerable population to eye disease because they are often unable to communicate that there is a problem with their vision. Eye conditions like amblyopia can be invisible to the parent but cause serious learning deficits in the child if it is not detected and treated early.
Early eye exams are important because children need the following basic visual skills for learning not comprehensively tested in basic pediatrician and school screenings:
- Near vision
- Distance vision
- Eye teaming (binocularity) skills
- Eye movement and tracking skills
- Focusing system evaluation
- Amblyopia
How often should I bring my child in for an exam? According to the American Optometric Association:
- Infants – Infants should receive an in-person comprehensive eye and vision assessment between 6 and 12 months of age for the prevention and/or early diagnosis and treatment of sight-threatening eye conditions and to evaluate visual development.
- Preschoolers – Preschoolers should receive at least one in-person, comprehensive eye exam between the ages of 2 and 5 to prevent or diagnose any condition that may have long-term effects.
- School-aged children – Children 6 to 18 years should receive a comprehensive in-person exam prior to entering the first grade and annually thereafter.
